Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that addresses infections in the teeth. When bacteria infiltrate the teeth due to damage to the white surface of the tooth, a tooth infection can occur. Your dentist or endodontist will perform a root canal to treat the infection and then repair the tooth.

Do I Need to See an Endodontist?

There may be several signs you need to see an endodontist; these include pain or sensitivity of the teeth and discolouration or swelling of the gums. It’s best to visit your dental clinic as soon as symptoms begin to avoid the possibility of an infection spreading to the tooth roots.

What to Expect During a Root Canal

Your dentist will administer a local anesthetic before the procedure. If you are particularly anxious about dental procedures, talk to your dentist about oral sedation or try the milder nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) for immediate relaxation effects. Your dentist will remove the infected part of the tooth and then clean the area, and seal the cavity with a filling.
